Summary: Kanda was used to claiming mutual hate with Allen, so when the bean calmly and matter-of-factly confessed he was in love with him, Kanda didn’t know what to make of it. And to put the cherry on top of his cake, not only the brat was in love with him, but now he was also a potential target of a freaky Noah?

A/N: A bit early, but Happy Birthday Allen! So, this will be my first Yullen multiparter fic. I kinda wrote it in a hurry coz my brother was only home for two days and he was always using his laptop. I could only snag his laptop for so long. But this was fun to write so I hope you’d enjoy it too.

- LOVE? WHAT LOVE? -
It was supposed to be a normal, non-mission day at the headquarters for one Yuu Kanda. But for some bizarre reason and another, Kanda found himself in a deserted hallway with the bean sprout, who was telling him something that made him wonder of he should get his ears checked.
With a blank, no-nonsense look, Kanda said, “What?”
“I said,” Allen calmly kept his voice in a matter-of-fact tone – because Kanda wouldn’t have it any other way – and said, “I’m in love with you.”
To that, Kanda could only stare blankly at the other boy. Okay, so apparently he hadn’t been hearing things then. But still...
“You love everyone,” Kanda stated with a frown. “You love those stupid Akuma, the goddamn Noah, and God knows, you probably even love the fucking Earl,” he added for good measure.
Allen’s left eyebrow twitched at that, but then he just sighed and started explaining in a tone of voice he reserved for talking with Timothy, “You see, ‘to love’ and ‘to be in love’ are kind of different.”
Kanda noted that the bean sprout did not deny about him loving the Earl. He wasn’t quite sure if it was because it was true or because the brat thought it was so stupid he didn’t need to comment on that, but either way, Kanda didn’t know what to make of it.
So instead, he asked, “What’s the difference?”
“...Kanda, have you gone through puberty?” Allen’s tone sounded half-amused and half-exasperated.
“You’re one to talk, bean sprout,” retorted Kanda, emphasizing at the nickname.
“I’m not a bean sprout!”
“You so are.” Now this was a familiar ground. Arguing, he could do this.
“Anyway,” Allen waved a dismissive hand, apparently not wanting to continue the stupid argument. “As I said, I’m in love with you—”
“Why?” Kanda found himself asking before he could stop himself. Not that he cared about the bean’s feelings, but if it had something to do with him...
“Honestly, I don’t know,” came the answer. “It just happened. Despite you being the jerk that you are, I still fell for you anyway,” the British boy tried to sound casual, but the slight tint of pink on his cheeks betrayed him.
Kanda kept silent for a moment, just watching the boy who still looked calm and composed despite the color of his cheeks. He wanted to believe that this was just some sort of a sick joke that the stupid rabbit made the bean do or something, and if that was the case, he would know how to deal with it; beat the hell out of the brat and the rabbit. But seeing those silver eyes, his brains eliminated that possibility. Now, he didn’t know how to deal with this Allen Walker, and he found that annoying.
“Look, I don’t give a damn about how you feel, so—”
“I know that,” Allen softly interjected.
Kanda raised an eyebrow. “Then why are you telling me this?”
“I just thought you should know.”
“Why?” Kanda demanded.
At this, Allen’s face turned serious. He glanced to the window to his right, to the softly falling snow outside, and whatever he saw there made his face darken.
“The fourteenth,” Allen began. “Master said that when I become the fourteenth, I’d kill someone that I love. For all I know, the Noah could bloody well attack everyone, because as you said, I love them all but...” the white haired boy paused to take a deep breath and turn his face away from the window to look at Kanda in the eye, and continued, “Of course I don’t plan on letting him taking over me completely. But he’s here, in my head, and sometimes he just... comes out... as you may already know. And you’re rather... well, special to me, compared to everyone else, so... whenever he comes out, I want you to be extra careful, just in case.”
Kanda remained silent as his brain was still processing the information. It was a little bit too much to take in, actually. It wasn’t everyday that someone whom you claim mutual hate with suddenly said that they were in love with you. And for Kanda, having someone loving him—not lusting, he was quite familiar with people lusting for him—as more than a comrade or a friend was already bizarre, and having the Allen Walker loving him was downright... he didn’t know the word. It just... wasn’t supposed to happen...
And to put the cherry on top of his cake, not only the brat was in love with him, but now he was also a potential target of a freaky Noah? The idea of it wasn’t so much scaring him rather than really, really annoying the hell out of him.
“What the fuck,” he finally managed to comment.
Allen gave him a wistful smile. “Yes, Kanda, ‘what the fuck’ indeed,” he agreed. Then, those stormy gray eyes were casted downwards as the British teen added, “I’m really sorry to get you involved. I’m sorry I’m in lo—”
“Shut up,” Kanda rudely interrupted, for hearing the word ‘love’ annoyed him right now. It made his chest stir. Uncomfortably so. “Are you done?”
“Yes. Yes, I’ve told you what you need to know. I’m sorry for dragging you here, but I don’t want Link to hear about this, so...”
“Whatever, bean sprout, I’m leaving.”
“Of course. See you later, then,” Allen waved him with a smile and Kanda just turned on his heels and stalked away.
Kanda noted that the brat didn’t bother to correct the nickname just now.

A few days had passed, and sometimes Kanda wondered if the whole conversation with the bean sprout had been a dream. He didn’t get to see the brat much during his days off at the HQ, and when he did, the bean sprout acted so normal around him and still annoyed the hell out of him.
But of course Kanda knew the talk had been real, so maybe... Maybe Allen was just confused? Maybe he wasn’t really in love with Kanda. Just because they had been paired on missions a lot together and got to spend a lot of time with each other, perhaps the stupid bean was confusing a sense of companionship with love?
Kanda could tell that, as friendly as Allen acted around everyone, he kept his so-called friends at an arm length; not letting them too far yet not wanting them to come any closer. Kanda would know, because he sort of did the same thing too. And he also noticed that they had been breaching each other’s walls somehow. He would not admit it out loud, but Kanda knew he and Allen shared some similarities, and that made them grow a sense of camaraderie with each other.
Perhaps that was it then. The bean sprout was just confused. A confused, stupid bean sprout; he could deal with that.
Just as soon as he found out how to deal with the brat, they were sent on a mission. It was just Kanda, Allen and Link this time, because it was supposed to be a simple retrieval mission in some random mountain in Sweden. ‘Supposed’ being the keyword, because things weren’t that simple when you were trapped in a blizzard up high in the mountains and your partner looked like ready to freeze to death.
Weakling.
Kanda squinted, trying to look as far ahead as possible with the wind and snow kept blowing at his face and all the whiteness that was surrounding him. Heavy boots crunched on the snowy grounds as he dragged his legs to keep walking through the ankle-deep snow. He glanced back over his shoulder every now and then to see if the three of them had been separated yet, and saw that the brat was stepping on his footprints to make walking easier.
Perhaps it was the bean’s luck, but Kanda saw a cabin just a few meters to his right, and Link seemed to notice it too, because he immediately suggested that they rest there until the blizzard was gone. And besides, it was getting dark.
Allen, of course, welcomed the suggestion whole-heartedly. Kanda just clicked his tongue, but he didn’t complain as he turned to trudge towards the seemingly abandoned cabin.
They shed their soaked outer coats once inside and hung them to dry, but even with the exorcist coat still on, it was still too cold inside the cabin. It was a small lodge, with one bedroom with attached bathroom, a living room with a fireplace and a kitchen. There were a two-seater and a one-seater sofa in the living room, a little battered but still looked comfortable enough. Link went to the bedroom in search for blankets while Kanda was busy breaking wooden furniture for makeshift firewood. Allen decided to move the sofas closer to the fireplace as Kanda started the fire.
“It’s Christmas,” Allen finally spoke up, sitting down on the loveseat, “And here we are, trapped in a blizzard in some random cabin up high in the mountains in Sweden.”
“Don’t whine on me,” Kanda warned while throwing broken chair legs into the fireplace.
“I’m not whining,” the brat started again, and Kanda could hear the pout in his tenor voice, “It’s just... it’s my birthday... and what a cold birthday it turns out to be,” Allen continued in a lower tone of voice.
Standing up at the fireplace, Kanda raised an eyebrow at the white-haired kid. Kid, because the brat had just showed Kanda his childish side. Kanda wondered why Allen even bothered to show that around him. Did he look like he cared? He was not Miranda; he wouldn’t give the brat some goddamn candies.
“Well, happy fucking birthday, stupid bean sprout. Now quit whining and make yourself useful and go find more things to burn if you want to keep your stupid arse warm.”
“Why, thank you,” Allen sarcastically replied while standing up from the sofa and going to rummage the house. Kanda felt the urge to roll his eyes, but he ended up just tch’ing at the bean’s retreating back.
Well, at least things weren’t... awkward. Now that he decided the bean was just being stupid and confused, Kanda found it easier to deal with the brat. They had been acting like nothing had changed between them... but then again, nothing probably had. It was good though, because having to work constantly with an awkward partner would be annoying.
Link emerged from the bedroom bearing two blankets, one pink and flowery, the other just a plain brown. Kanda frowned at the pink blanket. He would not be using it. Just as Link put the brown blanket on the two-seat sofa, Allen came back to the living room with a stack of old newspapers and magazines and put them near the fireplace. He saw the pink blanket Link was holding and a glint of amusement passed in his silver eyes, probably from the contrast of Link’s stern face and the girly blanket.
“There are only two usable blankets,” the inspector said as he settled himself in the one-seater and covered himself with the flowery material, before continuing, “that one is bigger so you two are sharing that.”
“What?” It was Allen who voiced it out, but Kanda shared the sentiment of not wanting to share a blanket. Hell, sharing a blanket with the brat meant that the bean would be inside his personal space and too close for comfort.
“I’m not having either of you sick from the cold in the morning and hinder our mission, so just bear with it,” Link deadpanned.
Kanda watched as Allen’s hand inched towards the blanket; the brat was probably still freezing and longing for warmth. Once he got hold of the warm material, Allen turned doubtful eyes towards Kanda, and the samurai sighed.
Kanda was sure he wouldn’t get sick or something—his curse wouldn’t allow that—and if he really must, he might be able to bear with the cold. That didn’t mean he’d be comfortable with it, though, and it was so damn freezing in the cabin, even with the fire.
“Fine,” he said, taking the blanket and unfolding it, before settling down on one corner of the loveseat, covering himself in the warm brown sheet. He looked up when the bean hadn’t moved from his spot. The older teen raised the material with his left arm, prompting the brat to come and join him. “Well?”
“Thanks,” the bean beamed at him and immediately settling himself next to Kanda, sighing contently from the warmth that the blanket provided.
Kanda just grunted as a reply. It was just for practicality’s sake, after all. Just so they’d be able to continue with their mission optimally. It wasn’t him being nice. No reason to be so stupidly happy about it.
But then, when Kanda caught a glimpse of the brat’s face from the corner of his eyes, he thought that maybe Allen did have a reason to be stupidly happy.
Contrary to popular beliefs, Yuu Kanda was not that socially retarded. He knew about these things; he just wasn’t quite proficient in dealing with them. And now, Kanda could see and was sure that the rosy color on Allen’s cheeks was not only due to the fire illuminating his figure and the soft, lingering smile on the brat’s face definitely meant something.
Realization dawned on him that the bean sprout really was in love with him.

But so far YAY. Because out of the two Allen would be the most likely to confess, and take charge in that sense *nod* since no Kanda isn't emotionally dumb, but he doesn't know how to initiate things (most likely).
The ending scene was freakin' adorable, btw. *snickers* so cute~
Also like the story (since again it sorta fits with...the only way I can see this pairing working *if it isn't just a hit-and-run kind of deal*)
chapter's also a bit on the short side *used to longer ones* but that's personal preference I suppose...

Haha, I knooooow. The point is kinda lost when you make them so OOC they're barely recognizable. I usually intentionally writing long fics only when I'm writing for someone else, like a request or something. I don't know why. A friend of mine said I'm a pressure junkie XD

I especially loved the moment when Yuu realizes that he has much in common with Allen. Somehow it was like reading the manga - so IC and at the same time as if the character has developed. and this question - "Did he look like he cared?" - yeah, Yuu Ol'Boy (LOL), you do look like you care - more than anyone xDD

You kept them in character reeeeaaaalllyyyy well, and Allen's confession was a nice surprise at the beginning of this fic. I love the way you wrote it through Kanda's POV. Oh Kanda, you always make everything looks interesting
and disastrous. ♥Moving to the specific lines I like (I think I have several of them~):
